The swell refers to a marked increase in the taper 2 1/2 inches above the rod grip. This swell is accomplished in two ways. One is to increase the bamboo strip width in that area the other is to create a mortice or insert other material in the swell area. A vast array of exotic woods can be used to create the mortice. Why one might want this is for both aesthetic and or practical reasons.
The main practical attribute for a swell is pretty simple: it stops the rod from flexing down through the grip. This effectively shortens the action length and imparts a feel that’s a little crisper and faster.
Aesthetically the swell can create a very striking look to the rod by imparting a uniqueness to the overall look.
